How to Get a Birth Certificate in Nepal (जन्म दर्ता)
The birth certificate is the first official record of identity in Nepal — needed for citizenship, school and passports. Here is how to register it.
जन्म दर्ता प्रमाणपत्र बनाउने प्रक्रिया — कहाँ दर्ता गर्ने, आवश्यक कागजात र ढिलो दर्ता।
A birth certificate (जन्म दर्ता) is registered at your local ward office (Local Registrar) under Nepal's civil registration system. It is the foundation document for citizenship, school admission and a passport.
35-day rule: A birth should ideally be registered within 35 days at the ward where the birth occurred or where the family resides. Later registration is still possible but may need extra verification.
Documents Required
- Parents' citizenship certificates (copies).
- Hospital birth record or notification, if the birth was in a hospital.
- Ward-level application form.
- Marriage registration of parents, where requested.
Registration Process
- Go to the ward office where the birth occurred or where the family lives.
- Fill the birth registration form with the child's and parents' details.
- Submit supporting documents — parents' citizenship and hospital record.
- Verification by the local registrar.
- Receive the birth certificate — often issued the same day if documents are complete.
Late Registration
If the 35-day window has passed, you can still register — bring supporting evidence (hospital records, school records, or witnesses) as the ward may require additional proof of the birth date.
✅ Register early. A birth certificate is required later for citizenship at 16 and for school-related documents — delays create paperwork problems down the line.
