The Non-Resident Nepali (NRN / गैर आवासीय नेपाली) card recognises Nepalis living abroad and foreign nationals of Nepali origin. It is associated with the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) and Nepali government provisions for the diaspora.
Two broad groups: Nepali citizens living abroad (for work/study/residence) and foreign citizens of Nepali origin (former Nepali citizens or their descendants).
Who Is Eligible
- Nepali citizens residing abroad (typically excluding SAARC-region special cases per rules).
- Foreign nationals of Nepali origin — those who previously held Nepali citizenship, or their children/grandchildren.
Benefits (per current provisions)
- Recognised identity as a Non-Resident Nepali.
- Facilitation for investment and certain economic activities in Nepal.
- Easier engagement with Nepal for the diaspora (subject to prevailing law).
How to Apply
- Check eligibility for your category (citizen abroad vs person of Nepali origin).
- Apply through the NRNA / Nepali mission (embassy or consulate) or the designated online system.
- Submit documents — passport, proof of residence abroad, and for origin cases, proof of former Nepali citizenship / descent.
- Pay the applicable fee and complete verification.
- Receive your NRN card / identity.
