Nepal Passport Renewal — In Nepal & From Abroad
Your passport expiring? Here is exactly how to renew a Nepali passport, whether you are in Nepal or living abroad.
नेपाली राहदानी (पासपोर्ट) नवीकरण गर्ने तरिका — नेपालमा र विदेशमा बस्ने नेपालीका लागि दूतावासबाट।
Nepali passports are not "extended" — renewal means a fresh e-Passport is issued in place of your expiring one. The process differs slightly depending on whether you are in Nepal or living abroad. New applicant rather than renewing? See our full passport guide.
Key point: Renew before your passport expires — many countries require at least 6 months validity for travel and visas. You submit your old passport and receive a brand-new e-Passport.
Renewing In Nepal
- Fill the online application on the Department of Passports portal (nepalpassport.gov.np) and note your application number.
- Book an appointment and pick your collection point — the Department of Passports (Narayanhiti, Kathmandu) or your District Administration Office (DAO).
- Pay the fee online or at the counter.
- Visit on your date with your old passport and citizenship certificate (originals + copies).
- Give biometrics — photo, fingerprints and signature.
- Collect your new e-Passport or track it online.
💡 Fast-track / urgent renewal is available only at the Department of Passports in Kathmandu, not at district offices.
Renewing From Abroad (for Nepalis living overseas)
If you live abroad, you renew through the nearest Nepali embassy or consulate. Because applications are processed via Kathmandu, it takes longer than in Nepal — apply well before expiry.
- Complete the online pre-enrollment for the e-Passport and note your application number.
- Book an appointment at your Nepali embassy / consulate.
- Attend in person — biometrics must be captured at the mission.
- Submit your old passport, citizenship (and any residence/visa documents the mission asks for).
- Pay the fee in the local currency as set by the embassy.
- Collect or receive your new e-Passport once it is printed in Nepal and returned to the mission.
✅ Living abroad? Start 3–4 months before expiry. Embassy processing routes through Kathmandu and takes longer than domestic renewal.
Documents Checklist
- Old passport (original + copy).
- Citizenship certificate (original + copy).
- Online application / pre-enrollment number.
- For those abroad: residence permit / visa copy if the embassy requests it.
- For minors: birth certificate and parents documents.
Lost or Damaged Passport
If your passport was lost or damaged, report it (a police report is usually required, and abroad the embassy will advise), then apply for a replacement e-Passport with your citizenship. The process is similar to renewal but with the loss report added.
