Share Market in Nepal — A Beginner Guide (NEPSE)
New to the Nepal stock market? Here is what NEPSE is, what you need to start, and how buying and selling shares actually works.
नेपालको शेयर बजार (NEPSE) मा लगानी सुरु गर्न के-के चाहिन्छ र शेयर कसरी किन्ने-बेच्ने भन्ने सुरुवाती जानकारी।
The Nepal Stock Exchange (NEPSE) is where shares of listed Nepali companies are traded. To take part you need three things set up once: a Demat account, a bank account, and an account with a licensed stock broker.
To start investing you need: 1) a Demat account (to hold shares electronically), 2) a Mero Share account (to apply for IPOs and view holdings), and 3) a broker / TMS account (to buy and sell on NEPSE).
The Building Blocks
| What | Purpose | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Demat account | Holds your shares electronically | Bank / broker (a DP) |
| Mero Share | Apply for IPO, view holdings | CDSC (meroshare.cdsc.com.np) |
| Broker / TMS | Buy & sell on NEPSE | Licensed stock broker |
| Bank (ASBA/CASBA) | Links payment for IPO & trades | Your bank |
How to Start — Step by Step
- Open a Demat account through a bank or broker (a Depository Participant) with your citizenship, photos and bank details.
- Get a Mero Share account from CDSC via your DP — this is how you apply for IPOs and see your holdings.
- Open a broker (TMS) account with a licensed stock broker to trade on NEPSE.
- Link your bank for ASBA/CASBA so money can be blocked for IPOs and settled for trades.
- Start with IPOs — many beginners begin by applying for IPOs (see our IPO apply guide) before trading in the secondary market.
Primary vs Secondary Market
- Primary market (IPO/FPO): you apply for new shares through Mero Share; allotment is by lottery if oversubscribed.
- Secondary market (NEPSE): you buy and sell already-listed shares through your broker on the TMS platform.
