National ID Card in Nepal (Rastriya Parichaya Patra)
Nepal's biometric National Identity Card (राष्ट्रिय परिचयपत्र) — what it is, how to register, and the documents you need.
राष्ट्रिय परिचयपत्र (NID) दर्ता गर्ने प्रक्रिया, आवश्यक कागजात र राष्ट्रिय परिचय नम्बर।
The National Identity Card (राष्ट्रिय परिचयपत्र / NID) is a biometric smart card issued by the Department of National ID and Civil Registration (DoNIDCR). It carries a unique National Identity Number (NIN) that links your identity across government services.
Note: The NID is being rolled out district by district. Registration is often organised through your District Administration Office (DAO) or designated registration centres — check your local schedule.
Documents Required
- Citizenship certificate (original + copy).
- Existing identity documents if requested (for data matching).
- Details of parents and spouse (for the record).
Registration Process
- Check your local registration schedule at your DAO or municipality.
- Fill the registration form with your personal and family details.
- Give biometrics — fingerprints, photograph and signature are captured.
- Get your National Identity Number (NIN) — issued as part of registration.
- Collect your smart NID card when it is printed and available.
Why the NID Matters
- Acts as a single, verifiable identity across government services.
- Increasingly linked to social security, banking and public services.
- Reduces the need to submit multiple documents repeatedly.
💡 Keep your citizenship details consistent with your NID record — mismatches can cause problems later when services are linked to your NIN.
