Nepal officially uses the Bikram Sambat (BS) calendar, which runs about 56 years and 8 months ahead of the English (Gregorian / AD) calendar. The Nepali new year starts on Baishakh 1, usually in mid-April.
The 12 Nepali months are बैशाख, जेठ, असार, साउन, भदौ, असोज, कार्तिक, मंसिर, पुष, माघ, फागुन, चैत्र — Baishakh, Jestha, Ashadh, Shrawan, Bhadra, Ashwin, Kartik, Mangsir, Poush, Magh, Falgun and Chaitra. Unlike the English calendar, each Nepali month can have 29 to 32 days, and the length varies year to year.
