What the Welfare Fund is
Every worker who goes abroad legally pays into the Foreign Employment Welfare Fund. In return, the fund provides support to workers and their families, including financial assistance in cases of death, serious injury or disability abroad, and help such as repatriating a body and supporting dependents. This is one of the biggest reasons to always go through the legal, documented process with a proper labour permit.
Who can claim
- Workers who travelled with a valid DOFE labour permit (shram swikriti) and paid into the fund.
- The legal heirs / family of a worker in case of death or permanent disability.
- Claims generally require that the worker used the legal channel — this is why an unverified "visit visa" job leaves families unprotected.
How to make a claim
- Contact the Foreign Employment Board (or your nearest labour/employment office) and the helpline 1135.
- Gather the required documents (see below) and get any foreign documents attested.
- Submit the claim application to the Board with the worker's permit and supporting papers.
- Track your claim with the Board; provide any additional documents they request.
Documents commonly required
| Case | Typical documents |
|---|---|
| Death claim | Labour permit & contract, passport, attested death certificate, relationship & legal-heir documents, claimant citizenship & bank details. |
| Injury / disability | Labour permit, medical / disability report, passport, citizenship & bank details. |
| Other support | As specified by the Foreign Employment Board for the particular scheme. |
⚠️ Exact eligibility, amounts and documents are set by the Foreign Employment Board and can change. Always confirm the current requirements with the Board and use the official process. Beware anyone asking for money to "speed up" a claim.
